Description

Xenesthis intermedia carries the humid Colombian forest in its build — heavy, deliberate, and saturated with colour that only reveals itself under close attention. A close relative of Xenesthis immanis, it shares the same massive frame but pushes the palette further: the carapace and legs carry an opalescent blue-violet sheen that shifts with the angle of light, set against a base of velvet black. Long reddish-brown setae diffuse that iridescence into a soft blue haze — a quality that photographs poorly and reads far better in person. Darker and more intensely iridescent than Xenesthis immanis, it stands as one of the most visually arresting species in the genus.

In temperament, Xenesthis intermedia is calm and terrestrial, with a dependable feeding response that makes routine care straightforward. Like other large-bodied theraphosids, it will kick urticating setae when pressed, so interactions should stay measured — this is a species built for observation, not handling.

The enclosure should mirror its forest-floor origins: a terrestrial setup with 7–10 cm of coconut fibre substrate, a secure hide, and a generously sized water dish. Humidity sits higher than for many New World species, maintained through regular misting rather than a fixed schedule. Room temperature is sufficient and no supplemental heating is needed under typical household conditions. Cross-ventilation matters more than any single parameter here — stagnant moisture invites problems regardless of how well the rest of the setup is managed.

Xenesthis intermedia is a collector's species in the clearest sense. It pairs naturally with Xenesthis immanis, and together the two sketch out a genus that remains genuinely underrepresented in European collections despite offering scale, temperament, and colour that few New World terrestrials can match. Years on, this is the kind of animal a keeper finds themselves walking past the enclosure to check on, just to catch the light hitting the carapace at the right angle.
