Description
Thrixopelma cyaneolum blue comes from the dry, cooler Andean slopes of Peru — terrain that shapes an animal quite different from the humidity-loving species that fill most collections. Within Thrixopelma, a genus not particularly celebrated for ornamentation, this one breaks rank: catch it at the right angle and a cool blue iridescence shifts across the setae over an otherwise understated dark body. Quiet until it isn't.
In keeping, Thrixopelma cyaneolum blue proves as composed as its colouring suggests. Terrestrial, slow-moving, and even-tempered, it will kick urticating setae if genuinely pressed, but defensive displays are rare and unhurried. Growth is moderate, which means more time to study each instar before the next moult arrives — and more time to catch the light shifting across the carapace.
The enclosure should reflect its origins: a coconut fibre and sand mix at 5–7 cm depth, a hide, and a water dish. Keep most of the substrate dry, with one corner lightly misted to provide a modest damp patch. Room temperature, or slightly cooler, suits this species well and matches the Andean conditions it evolved in. Good cross-ventilation is essential — stagnant, damp air is the one mistake this animal will not forgive. Offer appropriately sized prey and let the spider set its own pace.
Thrixopelma cyaneolum blue rewards the keeper who has learned to read subtlety — who finds more in a slow-moving spider with an iridescent secret than in flashier animals that perform on demand. Years on, it tends to be the enclosure you keep wandering back to: not because it demands attention, but because every so often the light catches it just right, and you remember why you picked it up in the first place.
