Description

Few tarantulas reward patience quite like Cyriopagopus albostriatus. Pale longitudinal stripes cut across near-black legs with the precision of a woodcut, and the contrast that earned it the name "Striated Velvet" is the kind of thing that stops a room when the animal finally breaks cover. Native to the monsoon forests of Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam — and known for years in the hobby as Haplopelma albostriatum — this is a species whose appeal lives in the tension between concealment and sudden presence.

In the enclosure, Cyriopagopus albostriatus is an uncompromising fossorial. It excavates deep, considered burrows and spends most of its time within them, emerging mainly after dark or when prey moves within striking distance. This is not a display species for keepers who want daily sightings — but the burrow itself becomes the exhibit. Watching Cyriopagopus albostriatus engineer and expand its tunnel system, rearranging substrate and silk-lining the entrance, is a form of behavioural observation few other species offer. Temperament is fast and defensive; the threat posture comes quickly, chelicerae raised, and a strike can follow without much further warning.

Deep substrate is the single requirement that matters most: 10 cm minimum, and 15 cm is more appropriate for adults, using a mix of coconut fibre and peat kept slightly damp throughout. Humidity around 70–80% suits this species well, provided airflow is adequate to prevent stagnation. Regular misting of the substrate maintains the moisture gradient the spider expects, and a shallow water dish should always be available. Room temperature is generally sufficient, though 24–28°C keeps the animal active and feeding regularly. No cork tube or artificial hide is necessary — Cyriopagopus albostriatus will excavate exactly what it wants and refuse substitutes.

This is a species for the keeper who has already spent time with Old World fossorial tarantulas and understands the particular patience they demand. It is not a first tarantula. But for a keeper ready to move into Asian fossorial species, Cyriopagopus albostriatus offers a genuine point of entry into that group — methodical, architecturally impressive, and built around a rhythm of concealment and sudden presence that, over years of keeping, becomes its own quiet reward. Each emergence from the burrow is earned, and that is precisely the point.
