Description

Cyriopagopus sp. Purple Zebra is an undescribed species from the tropical forests of Thailand, and it announces itself without apology. The body carries a deep, almost oil-slick iridescence in shades of purple and near-black, while pale, high-contrast banding runs across the legs in a pattern that genuinely earns its trade name — this is what a zebra might look like if evolution had decided to experiment with amethyst. Among the undescribed Cyriopagopus, it is a strong contender for the most visually arresting, and keepers who meet it for the first time tend to linger longer than they planned.

The character behind that colouration is every bit as Old World as the genus demands. Cyriopagopus sp. Purple Zebra is a committed burrower that will excavate and reshape its enclosure on its own terms, and it has little interest in being observed on yours. Fast, defensive, and unwilling to telegraph its intentions, it is not a species that rewards impatience. The appetite, however, is excellent — which makes it a pleasure to maintain, provided the keeper understands that feeding time is one of the few reliable moments of interaction this animal offers.

A fossorial species of this build needs at least 10 cm of moist coconut fibre, enough vertical depth to allow meaningful burrowing. A starter hide at the base of the enclosure helps it settle in quickly. A water dish should always be present. Humidity should be kept elevated, with regular misting to maintain a damp lower substrate without waterlogging the surface. Temperatures of 24–28°C suit this species well, and steady cross-flow ventilation keeps the enclosure healthy rather than stagnant. Appropriately sized prey items are taken readily and consistently.

Cyriopagopus sp. Purple Zebra rewards experienced keepers — particularly those building a serious collection around Asian Theraphosidae. It will not perform on demand, will not tolerate frequent disturbance, and will spend much of its life underground. What it offers instead is the quiet, sustained satisfaction of housing an animal that looks like nothing else in the genus: a sliver of iridescent purple emerging, very occasionally, to remind you exactly why you keep Old World spiders in the first place.
