Description

Southeast Asia's forests still hide entire arachnid lineages that science has yet to put a name to. Ornithoctoninae sp. Veronica is one of them — a regional form within the subfamily Ornithoctoninae, undescribed and waiting for its formal taxonomic placement. The colouration is deep and nearly black, with subtle undertones that only surface when the light catches it at the right angle. Rarely seen in European collections, it carries the particular pull of something not yet fully known.

In the enclosure, Ornithoctoninae sp. Veronica is thoroughly fossorial and nocturnal. It spends the overwhelming majority of its time inside burrows of its own construction and is in no rush to reveal itself. When it does emerge — or when something approaches the burrow entrance — the response is immediate: a raised-cheliceral threat posture followed by an ambush strike that leaves no doubt about the animal's reflexes. The silk laid around the entrance is not decoration but a sensory net, and watching the spider react to vibrations caught in that webbing is one of the more rewarding observations this species offers.

A minimum of 12 cm of substrate — a lightly moist mix of coconut fibre and peat — gives Ornithoctoninae sp. Veronica the depth it needs to behave naturally. Humidity around 75–80% suits it well, provided ventilation is adequate to prevent stagnation. A temperature range of 24–28°C is appropriate. Regular misting of the substrate maintains moisture without waterlogging. A hide is optional; the spider will excavate its own preferred chamber. A water dish should always be available for adults.

This is an animal for the experienced keeper who has long since stopped needing constant visible activity from their collection. Ornithoctoninae sp. Veronica is a collector's spider — kept for the rarity of its taxonomic position as much as for the quality of its brief appearances. Every emergence carries a particular weight when you know the lineage behind it has not yet been formally described, and years from now, watching this animal step out of its burrow will still feel like quietly taking part in something unfinished.
