Description

Tliltocatl vagans comes from the dry forests and scrublands of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala — a landscape of hard sun and sparse shade that shaped an animal dressed almost entirely in black. The cephalothorax and walking legs are a deep, matte obsidian; the opisthosoma arrives like an ember, a dense coat of rich russet setae that earns the species its common name, the Mexican Red Rump. Two colours, nothing more, but on a well-fed adult female the contrast reads less like camouflage and more like a deliberate design choice.

Temperament-wise, Tliltocatl vagans carries the unhurried disposition typical of the genus. It is terrestrial, with a healthy appetite and a steady if unspectacular growth rate. Like other members of Tliltocatl, it may kick urticating setae when sufficiently provoked, but it reaches for that response slowly and without drama. This is not a spider that will keep you on edge.

For the enclosure, 5–7 cm of coconut fibre substrate suits the terrestrial lifestyle well; a hide and a water dish complete the setup. Keep the substrate dry across most of the enclosure, with a small damp area in one corner maintained by occasional misting. Room temperature is sufficient — no supplemental heating is required under normal household conditions.

The genus Tliltocatl, formerly placed within Brachypelma, is CITES Appendix II listed; every specimen we sell is captive-bred and supplied with the appropriate documentation. Among a genus already known for forgiving animals, Tliltocatl vagans stands out as one of the most accessible — and that is precisely its appeal. Some tarantulas demand patience before they reward it. This one starts rewarding on day one, and years later, when you've added faster and rarer species to the shelf, it will still be the one sitting calmly in the open when guests ask which spider they can look at.
