Description
A big jumping spider with a big presence
Hyllus diardi stops you at first glance because of its size. Where most jumping spiders measure barely over a centimetre, Hyllus diardi can reach more than 2 cm in body length. That makes a real difference.
Size is not its only strength. It is a calm spider that likes to watch its surroundings with large, expressive eyes. It has everything people love about jumping spiders, curiosity, activity and personality, in a body big enough to actually see it well.
Appearance
Hyllus diardi is heavily built and stocky. Its colours are browns and greys with lighter stripes and patterns on the abdomen and legs, and its body is covered in dense hairs. The front pair of eyes is very large, typical of jumping spiders but especially striking at this size.
Males often show stronger contrast and more prominent chelicerae.
Adults reach 15-25 mm in body length.
Care
- Enclosure: a larger vertical enclosure with good ventilation; Hyllus needs more room than smaller jumping spiders. Add twigs, cork bark and climbing décor
- Temperature: 24-28°C. A tropical species that likes warmth
- Humidity: moderate. Mist one wall every 2-3 days. Keep the substrate slightly moist, never wet. Good ventilation is key
- Feeding: larger fruit flies, small crickets, small Turkestan roaches. Feed every 2-3 days. Thanks to its size, Hyllus handles bigger prey than typical jumping spiders
- Difficulty: intermediate. It needs a little more attention than Phidippus: warmth, stable humidity and a larger enclosure. But it is not difficult
Who is it for?
For people who love jumping spiders but want something bigger. Hyllus diardi is a great upgrade after Phidippus regius: larger, calmer and just as charismatic. Perfect if you want a jumping spider you can really see in the enclosure.
