Description
Grammostola iheringi
Brazil — the state of Rio Grande do Sul — and Uruguay, regions of temperate climate with winters cooler than the typical tropics. This is the home of Grammostola iheringi, one of the largest members of the Grammostola genus. A dark, brown-black body with a distinctive red-burgundy abdomen clothed in dense setae gives it a vivid contrast — a warm, almost fiery-red accent on a dark tarantula. Females reach impressive sizes comparable to the largest Theraphosa. This is a spider that impresses by scale, presence and that signature red accent.
In captivity it is a calm-tempered, slow-growing species. Grammostola iheringi is not especially nervous, rarely flicks urticating hairs, and tolerates observation well. Terrestrial by habit, it readily uses retreats. Its hunting is classic — sure and precise. Owing to its cooler origins it needs no high temperatures — indeed, this species dislikes heat.
In the terrarium it needs space to match the bulk of adults — a 35×35 cm enclosure or larger. Substrate of mixed peat and coconut fiber, 5–7 cm. A solid retreat and a water dish. Moderate humidity, with regular misting of one part of the substrate. Temperature 18–24°C — Grammostola iheringi handles cooler conditions better and needs no artificial heating. Feeding moderate — it grows slowly.
Grammostola iheringi is a tarantula for the keeper who values long-term projects and is in no hurry for results. Adult females reach impressive sizes with a striking red abdomen, but they take years to get there. Ideal for someone who wants a spider with the character of the classic Grammostola, in its largest form, with a fiery accent on the abdomen. Calm, intimate, enormous — everything you could ask of it.
