Description
Grammostola actaeon
Brazil and Uruguay — pampas country and the dry, open spaces of the subtropics. Grammostola actaeon is one of the lesser-known members of its genus, with a brown-black body and a distinctive red-burgundy abdomen that deepens to a true wine-red in adults. This fiery accent on a dark body is the species' signature — a contrast most striking just after a molt, when the setae are at their most vivid.
In captivity it is a calm, even-tempered species. Grammostola actaeon leads a terrestrial life, digs shallow scrapes and rarely shows aggression. Hunting is classic — the spider waits for prey and strikes with precision. Coming from cooler regions, it needs no high temperatures. It grows more slowly than tropical Brazilian tarantulas, but steadily — each molt deepens the intensity of the red abdomen.
In the terrarium it needs moderate space — a 25×25 cm enclosure for adults. Substrate of mixed peat and coconut fiber, 5–7 cm. A retreat and a water dish. Moderate humidity with regular misting. Temperature 20–25°C — this species dislikes heat. Feeding is standard, matched to size.
Grammostola actaeon is a tarantula for the keeper who values intimate, peaceful species in classic coloration with a striking accent. Less known than the popular pulchra or rosea, but in the same spirit — calm, gentle, long-lived, with the bonus of a fiery burgundy abdomen. Ideal for someone after a rarer Grammostola without paying for exotic novelties.
