Description

Few spiders look as if they were drawn in a single stroke of ink, but Cyriopagopus sp. BIG BLACK manages exactly that. The body is rendered in one uninterrupted matte black — no patterning, no contrasting carapace, no concession to ornament — and the effect is unlike anything else in the hobby. The name reads like marketing until you see the animal: it really is big, and it really is black, in the most uncompromising sense of both words. A heavy, robustly built frame announces its fossorial habits before it has taken a single step.

The provenance remains unresolved. This undescribed species is known only from Southeast Asia, and the mystery of its precise origin only deepens its appeal for the kind of keeper who wants something science has not yet pinned down. Cyriopagopus sp. BIG BLACK is fast, decisive, and entirely uninterested in cooperating with its keeper — it burrows deep, defends its tunnel with conviction, and reacts to disturbance with the speed the genus is known for. Appetite is strong throughout its life, and growth is brisk for keepers prepared to meet it on its own terms.

House it in a deep enclosure with at least 10 cm of slightly moist coconut fibre, a starter burrow or cork hide, and a water dish. Humidity should sit on the higher side, maintained through occasional moistening of one corner of the substrate rather than fixed misting schedules. Temperatures of 24–28°C keep it active and feeding; in cooler rooms supplemental heating is sensible, as ambient temperatures alone will slow it noticeably.

Cyriopagopus sp. BIG BLACK rewards keepers who already understand that the most compelling animals are rarely the most cooperative. Years into ownership, it tends to occupy a quiet, uncontested corner of the collection — a block of living darkness at the mouth of its burrow that you will find yourself checking on long after the lights are off. For collectors drawn to undescribed species and the slow privilege of watching something the literature has yet to catch up with, few spiders deliver the impression this one does.
