Description
Cyriocosmus perezmilesi
Some tarantulas overwhelm with size, others with the precision of their markings — Cyriocosmus perezmilesi is firmly the second kind. This dwarf species from South America carries on its abdomen the intricate design the whole Cyriocosmus genus is famous for: a contrasting pattern reminiscent of a star or a heart, finished with delicate banding on the legs and a metallic sheen in good light. It sits easily on a fingertip, yet looks like living jewellery.
Its temperament is calm and unconfrontational. Terrestrial and moderately active, its venom remains harmless to humans. It spends most of its time around the retreat it drapes in silk — and the most rewarding thing to watch is how such a tiny spider manages its space, and how its pattern lights up with every change in the angle of the light.
It needs little: a small terrestrial enclosure with 5–7 cm of coconut fiber, a retreat, room temperature and regular misting that keeps part of the substrate damp and part dry. A small water dish for larger specimens. Its modest size means the whole spectacle fits in a compact container that slips onto any shelf.
Ideal for a beginner with a little experience looking for a jewel of a species — small, striking and a pleasure to observe.
