Description

Ceratogyrus sanderi comes from the drier regions of South Africa and Mozambique — a landscape of sparse vegetation, hard-baked soil, and relentless sun. It is among the lesser-known members of the horned baboon genus, but obscurity has never diminished an animal's character, and it does not here. The horn-like foveal protrusion is present, if somewhat more restrained than in Ceratogyrus marshalli, and the overall coloration runs toward dark charcoal and brown-grey, with a subtle geometric pattern across the opisthosoma that rewards a slow, close look. The build is compact and low-slung — slightly smaller than Ceratogyrus darlingi or Ceratogyrus marshalli, but carrying the same sense of density and purpose.

Temperamentally, Ceratogyrus sanderi is every bit the Ceratogyrus: fast, self-assured, and genuinely uninterested in being observed on anyone's terms but its own. It webs heavily, rearranges its enclosure with evident intention, and eats with an appetite that makes feeding a reliably satisfying ritual. This is not a species that hides and waits to be forgotten — it builds, it moves, and it makes its presence felt.

Housing follows the standard terrestrial setup: 5–7 cm of coconut fiber substrate, a hide positioned at the substrate edge, and a water dish for adults. Humidity should be kept moderate with regular misting, and room temperature is sufficient. Ventilation is the single non-negotiable requirement. As with all members of the genus, expect the enclosure to be thoroughly remodeled, silk woven into every corner, and the hide incorporated into an architecture that is entirely the spider's own design.

For the keeper building a complete Ceratogyrus collection, Ceratogyrus sanderi is the piece that rounds out the genus — less heralded than its relatives, which only means it tends to surprise. The horn is there. The speed is there. The restless, purposeful intelligence is there. What is absent is the fanfare, and over the years of keeping this species, that quiet distinction tends to feel like a recommendation rather than a drawback.
