Description
Poecilotheria rufilata, known as the “Red Slate Ornamental”, is one of the largest and most beautiful arboreal tarantulas of India, from the Western Ghats. Its olive-green body with warm rusty-red accents and a lace-like pattern makes a mature female truly impressive.
Females grow up to 8 cm in body length, with a legspan reaching 22 cm – a substantial species. Very fast and alert, a typical “ornamental”: it does not seek conflict, but it disappears into its retreat in a fraction of a second. Its venom is potent and medically significant, so this is a species for experienced keepers.
It needs a tall, vertical enclosure with a cork tube or bark to web around. Temperature 26–28°C by day, dropping to about 22°C at night, humidity 80–90%, gentle ventilation and constant access to water. It spends most of its life in a silk tunnel near the top of the enclosure.
CITES-listed (Appendix II / EU Annex B). We supply our specimens with full documentation – every spider comes with a captive-breeding certificate and ships with the complete paperwork. A spider purely for observation in the terrarium.
