Description

Lasiocyano sazimai is one of the very few genuinely blue New World tarantulas, and arguably the most arresting of them. Under the right light, the metallic sheen across the carapace and legs shifts from deep cobalt to something closer to an electric current made visible. What makes the species remarkable isn't just the colour itself — it's that this colour normally belongs to fast, defensive Old World species, and here it arrives in an entirely different temperament.

That temperament is, frankly, a relief. Lasiocyano sazimai is terrestrial, calm and unhurried — not prone to bolting, and while it can kick urticating setae, it rarely does so without genuine provocation. It feeds readily and grows at a measured pace, which means the keeper spends more time watching and less time managing a crisis. The species hails from the tablelands and gallery forests of the Chapada Diamantina, a highland region in Bahia, Brazil.

Housing is equally uncomplicated. A terrestrial enclosure with 5–7 cm of coconut fibre substrate, a hide and a shallow water dish covers the essentials. Moderate humidity maintained through occasional misting is enough, and room temperature suits it well. Cross-ventilation matters, as with any species, but no specialist setup is required.

Lasiocyano sazimai sits in a category of its own: the blue tarantula that doesn't ask you to prove yourself first. In a hobby where that colour almost always comes paired with speed and an unpredictable temperament, this species delivers the full visual reward without the accompanying tension. Keepers who acquire one tend to hold onto it for years — not as a showpiece admired from across the room, but as something to sit with at close range. A jewel from the Chapada Diamantina that, unusually for its colouring, will actually stay still long enough to be appreciated.
