Xenesthis sp. Blue

Description
The genus Xenesthis has legendary status in the hobby, and the "Blue" form is its most sought-after incarnation. Where Xenesthis immanis plays with purple, sp. Blue goes a step further: the carapace and femora can shine with a deep blue-violet gloss that makes the spider look lacquered in good light. The species still awaits formal scientific description and remains rare in collections.
This is a large, heavy-bodied terrestrial tarantula from Colombia. An adult female reaches 7-8 cm in body length and has a presence that is hard to ignore. In the terrarium it happily reworks the substrate and deepens its hide, so give it a roomy enclosure with at least 10 cm of substrate and a stable starter hide.
It can be nervous during maintenance, but its first line of defence is not its fangs - it kicks urticating hairs whenever disturbed. Keep that in mind while working in the enclosure. The venom itself is mild, as is typical of New World tarantulas.
It prefers slightly cooler conditions than lowland species: 22-26°C and 70-80% humidity are all it needs. For a keeper with a few tarantulas of experience who wants a top-shelf collector species, sp. Blue is the natural next step.
