Ornithoctoninae sp. Ho Chi Minh

Ornithoctoninae sp. Ho Chi Minh hails from southern Vietnam, in the lowlands around Ho Chi Minh City. The carapace glows in warm gold-bronze against dark walking legs banded in the same burnished tone, and the abdomen carries a muted beige striped pattern that pulls the whole animal together. The name "Vietnamese Gold Earth Tiger" is not marketing copy — it is straight description. Few fossorial Theraphosidae wear their colours with this kind of warmth.

Like the rest of the Ornithoctoninae, this one is quick, alert and unapologetically defensive. It spends the day below the substrate, extending its burrow and emerging after dark to hunt. Watch through the glass at night and you will see what makes these earth tigers genuinely compelling — the strike is less a lunge than a resolution, sudden and absolute, as though the animal had been rehearsing it for hours. Appetite is reliable, and prey rarely lingers.

The enclosure needs a minimum of 10 cm of substrate — a moist mix of coconut fibre and topsoil suits this species well. Provide a shallow water dish. Humidity should sit on the higher end, maintained through regular misting rather than full saturation. Keep the temperature between 24–28°C; supplementary heating may be needed if your room runs cooler than that for long stretches. Cross-ventilation matters more than any single husbandry parameter here — stagnant, humid air is a far greater risk than a brief dry spell.

Ornithoctoninae sp. Ho Chi Minh is for the keeper who has decided that fossorial Old World theraphosids deserve a slot in the collection — and who wants one that earns its space on looks alone. Gold on black, warm where so many Asian earth tigers run cool and slate-grey: this is the animal you find yourself returning to years later, still watching the burrow entrance long after the lights go out.
