Cyriocosmus elegans

Cyriocosmus elegans is proof that two centimetres of spider can hold your attention as completely as any giant. The body is a deep, smoky base, and across the opisthosoma sits a crisp orange pattern so precisely placed it looks drawn on — the kind of detail you find yourself returning to under a torch, long after the novelty of larger species has settled. The specific epithet means exactly what it promises.

This is one of the founding dwarf species in the hobby — among the first Cyriocosmus to reach captive keeping, and a fixture in collections ever since. Native to Venezuela and Trinidad, where it occupies humid tropical forest and transitional zones, it is terrestrial and unhurried, content to scrape out shallow depressions and settle into a hide. It is neither skittish nor defensive, and grows at a pace that rewards a patient eye rather than demanding one. Adults reach roughly 2–2.5 cm in body length.

Husbandry is refreshingly simple. A small enclosure with around 5 cm of coconut fibre, a hide and a water dish covers everything essential. Keep one corner lightly damp through occasional misting, but never let the substrate go waterlogged. Room temperature suits it well.
