Description
"Nhen Dep" means "beautiful spider" in Vietnamese, and the name earns its keep. This undescribed Ornithoctoninae carries a dark body shot through with blue and violet iridescence along the legs — colour that doesn't shout but rewards the keeper who waits for the right angle and the right light. The hobby is full of flashier animals; few of them feel quite this private.
Native to the humid forests of Vietnam, Ornithoctoninae sp. "Nhen Dep" lives a fossorial life in deep leaf litter and soil, excavating with purpose and defending its retreat with matching conviction. Movement is fast and committed, the feeding response reliably strong, and the threat display unambiguous when the animal feels crowded — none of which should surprise anyone already keeping Asian fossorials, but all of which sets the terms for maintenance.
Provide at least 10 cm of moist substrate — a coconut fibre and topsoil mix works well — deep enough to support genuine burrowing rather than surface sheltering. A starter burrow or hide at substrate level, a water dish, and a consistently humid corner round out the setup. Hold temperatures between 24 and 28°C and pair the moisture retention with proper cross-ventilation; stagnant air in a damp enclosure invites mould and mites faster than any other husbandry slip.
Ornithoctoninae sp. "Nhen Dep" suits experienced keepers already fluent in Old World fossorial temperaments — those who accept that the animal dictates the pace of the relationship. Undescribed, genuinely uncommon in collections, and carrying a name local people gave it long before the hobby took notice. Years from now, when the burrow is deep and a flash of blue-violet surfaces briefly at feeding time, that name will still feel exactly right.
