Description

Holothele longipes hails from Trinidad and the northern coast of Venezuela, where it lives out its days on humid tropical forest floors. It is a small terrestrial species with a dark body lifted by a soft metallic sheen — easy to overlook at first, but quietly elegant once you stop and look. The species name longipes means "long-legged," and the animal earns it: the legs are proportionally longer than those of most terrestrials at this size, giving it a rangy, slightly leggy silhouette that sets it apart from its stockier cousins.

In temperament, Holothele longipes is genuinely uncomplicated. It webs readily, anchoring silk across the substrate and around its hide in low terrestrial sheets, and hunts with quiet efficiency rather than theatrical bursts. It is not defensive, not flighty, and it feeds with the steady appetite appropriate to its modest size — a species that simply gets on with the business of living.

Husbandry is refreshingly straightforward. A small enclosure with around 5 cm of coconut fibre substrate provides the foundation; add a hide and a water dish, and the setup is essentially complete. Humidity is kept moderate through regular misting, and room temperature is sufficient year-round. Cross-ventilation matters here — stagnant, damp air is the one condition to avoid.

Holothele longipes suits any keeper who wants a small, calm, low-maintenance terrestrial that occupies a modest corner of a shelf and never demands attention it hasn't earned. It asks for little and rewards patience with its quietly industrious webbing. Years on, it tends to remain in collections not for spectacle but for the steady, unhurried presence it brings to the room.
