Description

Gold belly, blue legs — Harpactira chrysogaster wears a colour combination that reads less like camouflage and more like deliberate design. The species name says it plainly: "chrysogaster" means "golden belly," a reference to the warm, amber-toned setae covering the underside of the opisthosoma. Set that against the cool blue iridescence of the legs and you have one of the most visually arresting members of a genus that has never been short on looks.

This species hails from the more humid regions of South Africa's eastern coast, and like all Harpactira it is quick and genuinely defensive. It responds to disturbance in a hurry, and anyone approaching it expecting the pace of a slower Old World terrestrial will be corrected on the spot. That quickness isn't aggression — it's the animal's primary survival strategy — but it does demand attentive husbandry. Harpactira chrysogaster is terrestrial, settles readily into a well-prepared enclosure, and rewards patience with a confident, active presence and a healthy appetite.

Provide a substrate of coconut fibre mixed with organic topsoil at a depth of 7–10 cm, a secure hide, and a water dish. Keep humidity moderate through occasional misting, without saturating the substrate. Room temperature is sufficient under normal indoor conditions; no supplemental heating is needed.

This is a species for the keeper who has moved past the idea that a defensive animal is a lesser one. The gold and blue will still be catching the light through your enclosure walls years from now, and the sharp, unhurried watchfulness will be just as present. Some species you observe; Harpactira chrysogaster observes you back.
