Hapalopus sp. guerilla

Few tarantulas pack so much visual punch into such a tiny frame. Hapalopus sp. guerilla rarely exceeds 3–4 cm in body length as an adult female, yet the dark base broken by sharp orange accents across the abdomen and legs catches the eye from the other side of the room. It is, quite simply, a pocket-sized species that refuses to behave like one.

Temperament matches the footprint. Hapalopus sp. guerilla is calm and unhurried on the substrate, lays down silk readily, and makes confident use of a small hide. Growth is brisk by tarantula standards — which makes sense, given how little growing there is to do. Appetite scales accordingly: appropriately sized prey is taken without drama and without waste.

Housing requires very little space and even less complexity. A small ventilated enclosure with 3–5 cm of coconut fibre substrate, a miniature hide, and a shallow water dish covers the essentials. Keep humidity moderate through occasional misting rather than permanent saturation. Room temperature suits most households; no supplemental heating is needed.

Hapalopus sp. guerilla quietly makes the case that scale and spectacle are not the same thing. It rewards the keeper who would rather watch a complete little world on a windowsill than fill another shelf, and it has a way of staying in collections long after larger, louder species have come and gone.
