Description

Among Sri Lankan arboreal tarantulas, Poecilotheria vittata plays in halftones. Instead of loud colours it wears a graphite-grey, ghostly pattern that earned it the name Ghost Ornamental. The markings look ink-drawn: bands and marbling run along the abdomen and carapace, while the underside of the front legs hides the bright warning accent typical of the whole genus.

In the wild it lives in bark crevices and tree hollows. Recreating that in the terrarium is simple: a tall enclosure, a solid vertical cork slab, moderate light and good ventilation. Humidity of 70-80% and room temperature are perfectly adequate, with an optimum of 24-28°C.

Like every Poecilotheria it is lightning fast, and its venom is medically significant. This remains a display-only spider, best suited to experienced keepers who anticipate the animal instead of reacting to it.

For all its speed, vittata avoids confrontation - its first choice is always to retreat upwards into cover. Calm maintenance and sensible feeding make keeping it safe and rewarding.

The genus Poecilotheria is CITES-listed (Appendix II, EU Annex B). Our specimens are captive bred and come with origin documentation.
