Description

Dolichothele rufoniger is one of those small Brazilian dwarfs that rewards patient observation rather than first impressions. The body is dark, warmed across the opisthosoma by rufous setae — a quiet, almost ember-toned palette that photographs flat but reads beautifully through the glass. Lightly built and quick on its feet, it shares the genus trait of compulsive silk production: webbing appears the moment it settles in, anchoring cork bark, threading across the substrate, and gradually transforming the enclosure into something that belongs entirely to the spider.

In the keeper's hands it is active and fast without being temperamental. There is no real defensive record worth dwelling on — what you get instead is motion. Dolichothele rufoniger rarely sits still long enough to be taken for granted, feeds enthusiastically, grows at a satisfying pace, and turns a plain glass enclosure into a working piece of natural architecture.

Setup is uncomplicated. A modestly sized terrestrial enclosure with around 5 cm of coconut fibre substrate, a hide, and a shallow water dish covers the essentials. Moderate humidity suits it; light, regular misting keeps the air right without souring the substrate. Room temperature is sufficient year-round. The most rewarding thing you can give this species is floor space — it will silk every centimetre you offer.

This is a dwarf for the keeper who has moved past the novelty of simply owning a tarantula and wants something genuinely worth watching — a small animal with an outsized behavioural footprint. Years in, you will find yourself lingering over the enclosure long after feeding is done, tracing how each successive moult expands the silk map underfoot.
